Altar Servers (Children)
Altar servers assist the priest during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Being an altar server is a great opportunity for Catholic boys and girls of North American Martyrs Parish to serve God and His Church. Interested boys and girls can begin serving in fourth grade and may continue into their high school years. Contact Louise Corpora (scheduler): 412-373-0330.
Altar Servers (Adults)
This ministry came into being to fill the need for funeral servers to replace using the children from school. Another group of Adult Servers serve the daily 8:00 a.m. Monday thru Friday mass. Contact Ed Dobrinsky at 412-795-8837.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
North American Martyrs Parish currently has a total of about fifty laymen and laywomen who are commissioned to serve as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion at North American Martyrs Church or at St. Michael Church.
The principal function for most of these men and women is to assist the priest Celebrant (the ordinary minister) with the distribution of Holy Communion during Sunday Mass. In addition, some of our extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion minister to the homebound parishioners from our Churches and to the Catholic residents in local nursing homes and personal care homes by taking the Eucharist to them. About ten ministers regularly visit Catholic patients in Forbes Regional Hospital.
Men and women who are 18 years of age or older may be appointed to this ministry. They should be mature in faith and be known to other parishioners as practicing Catholics in good standing in the Catholic Church. The Pastor and experienced extraordinary ministers provide preparation and training for this ministry. The Diocese of Pittsburgh requires participation in the “Protecting God’s Children” program and in a workshop that covers “Ministering to the Sick”.
The privilege of offering the Body of Christ or the Blood of Christ to a fellow parishioner or to a family member is surpassed only by the blessing received in so doing. The combined corporal and spiritual works of mercy are a very real aspect of this ministry that cannot fail to bring the presence of Christ into your life.
If you have an interest in this very rewarding ministry you may contact our Pastor by calling the Parish Office at 412-373-0330 for North American Martyrs or 412-373-2610 for St. Michael.
Lectors make the public proclamations of God's Word. On Sunday lectors do two readings, and on other special feasts and ceremonies, they serve in the delivery of various readings of the scriptures. If you would like to volunteer as a lector at North American Martyrs Parish, call us to learn more. Men and women are welcome to serve as lectors and we have lectors of all ages. Contact John Aiken: 412-856-9111 or e-mail email@example.com.
The Greeters at North American Martyrs work to ensure that all who gather in worship will feel welcome in our community. With a smile, a hug, or a handshake, Greeters welcome the Assembly before the liturgy and wish them well as they leave. Greeters also provide necessary information about the church to visitors and others who request it. Through their ministry, the Greeters work to ensure that all feel truly welcome and excited about participating fully in the Eucharistic celebration. Contact Donna White at 724-327-7408.
Along with Greeters, Ushers are a vital part of our mission of hospitality. Ushers also welcome the Assembly to worship, and then help them find seating. They identify and assist Assembly members as gift-bearers, distribute bulletins and present the Stewardship offering to the priest.
